April 11 -- photos by Dave Piper and Julie Owens
Excavation is complete on the west and south portions of the bioswale and drain rock is being installed. The trusses are stained and sealed on the inside and drywall is being taped on the high roof portion. The staff area drywall is complete and the painters are at work there. After a long process, the roofing is about done. It has taken a long time but it's a difficult roof and weather was a factor. The roofing contractor has done a good job and not complained about the difficulties. The windows are installed with the exception of the three, large arched windows which have experienced delays. However, the frame material is in the shop and installation should begin very soon. The building is "in the dry" and the moisture content appears low. From the pictures, it is obvious that the fireplace is complete, with the exception of the mantle-type plaque to be made from an old growth fir plank. Tile work is underway in the rest rooms and adjoining hallway.
Overall, the project is on-schedule. The planting of landscape materials is going to be done by the City through grants and volunteers and is expected to start the second week of June.
The project is also on-budget with a projected shortfall of about $50,000. That deficit will be met by additional grants which have been applied for, unused construction contingency budget or a reduction in furniture purchases. -- Dave Piper
